TEAM UPDATE: Indigenous SNAC Series Announced!
We are thrilled to announce a 3-part series of events aligning with our ongoing goal to Indigenize SNAC!
IndigenizeSNAC Series
This special series seeks to Indigenize SNACSchool by modifying our standard SNACSchool programs, seeking participation and feedback from Indigenous individuals, and culminating in an Indigenous SNAC edit-a-thon in November! EVERYONE, regardless of your experience with archives, metadata and research, is welcome to attend any part of this series but only those who complete Parts 1 and 2 will be able to edit SNAC records in real-time-during the final event!
The skills build from Part 1 on, so we recommend attending the sessions as they are available below. We ask that those interested in attending register for the individual Parts below so that we can try to accommodate conflicts that may arise–links for registration after each description!
Part 1 | Virtual SNACSchool Event
Indigenous Research and Reference
July 16, 1-3 pm EST
SNAC Research and Reference is intended for those wanting to learn how to use SNAC for conducting their own research, or those who provide reference and want to up their game! Attendees will get an overview of SNAC’s website and search functions and will learn how it can help them with their archival research goals.
Part 2 | Virtual SNACSchool Event
Indigenous Create and Edit
August 6 and 7, 1-5 pm EST both days
SNAC Create and Edit is a multi-module course geared towards those interested in editing in SNAC. Some archival research training or experience is recommended before taking this class, and previously recorded sessions and PDFs of slide decks are available to revisit steps and refresh your memory. Attendance is required at both days to “graduate” the Create and Edit modules. If you cannot complete both of these days, there will be a Standard Create and Edit session on October 14 and 15, 1-5 pm EST both days.
***We may reach out to you for feedback after this event.***
Part 3 | Hybrid SNAC Event
Indigenous SNAC Edit-a-thon
Virtual | November 14, 11:30 am-5 pm EST
In-person | November 14, 11 am-5 pm EST in conjunction with the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Crystal City, VA
Details for in-person event will be coming soon! Email sbeland@umd.edu to join a list to be notified when registration is open!
Registration for ASIS&T NOT required to attend virtually or in-person
This edit-a-thon is open to ALL SNAC Editors and Trainers, but will have an Indigenous focus and objectives relating to some technical and editorial projects that have occurred, such as expansions and implementations of thesauri and controlled concepts modules. The aim of this Indigenous SNAC edit-a-thon is to improve discovery of Indigenous archival material that has been dispersed to multiple repositories, and to continue exploring best practices around entities in SNAC for Indigenous, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or First Nations individuals and Nations, as well as for colonial actors and institutions whose records hold relevance for Indigenous researchers. No prior experience participating in an edit-a-thon or working with the SNAC platform is required.
***We may reach out to you for feedback after this event.***
All of these events are listed on the SNAC Cooperative website, in addition to our Standard public programs. You are welcome to share this information with your networks as well! If you have any questions, please contact:
